Colorless or white crystalline powder, easily deliquescent, with salty smell.1mol1 aqueous solution H value is 7.0-9.0.Relative density(d45) 1.570.Melting point 292°C, very soluble in water (235g/100mL,20C;492g/100mL,62C) alcohol (33g/100mL) and methanol (33g/100mL).(235g/100mL,20C;492g/100mL,62C) alcohol (33g/100mL) and methanol (24.24g/100mL.15°C), insoluble in ether and acetone.

Potassium acetate is used as an anti-icing substance, replacing chlorides such as calcium chloride and magnesium chloride. It is less erosive and corrosive to the soil and is particularly suitable for de-icing airport runways, but is more expensive; used as a food additive (preservative and to control acidity); and in ethanol precipitation of DNA.
